CalNat Field Trip: Fire Ecology

Registered participants of our California Naturalist course and Akuutet Learning Nursery Internship are invited to join a Fire Ecology-themed Field Trip to the Rancho Sierra Vista/ Satwiwa site in the Santa Monica Mountains. Optional Bus transportation from the LA River Center & Gardens is provided.

About the Event

Our Fire Ecology Field Trip will take place in the Santa Monica Mountains at the Rancho Sierra Vista/ Satwiwa site. Inhabited for thousands of years, the Chumash people consider this area to be a sacred place. The site burned during the 2013 Springs Fire. We'll be joined by Matt Wells and Olivia Parra from Santa Monica Mountains Fund to discuss fire ecology and restoration efforts.

Schedule for the Day:

7:30am - Bus Departs from LA River Center & Gardens**

9:00 Bus/ Participants Arrive

9:00-9:30 Intro/Grounding activity 

9:30-10:00 Fire Ecology & Restoration

10:00-11:30 Interpretive Hike (Less than 3 miles, well maintained trail, generally considered easy conditions with minimal elevation gain)

11:30-12:30 Fire Ecology Journal Activity 

12:30-1:00 Closing / Lunch

1:00 Bus Departs

2:30pm Bus Arrives back to LA River Center & Gardens**

**We will have optional free bus transportation available departing from Los Angeles River Center and Gardens at 570 W Ave 26, Los Angeles, CA 90065. The bus will depart at 7:30am and return at 2:30pm. Please reserve your spot in the registration form.

If you are driving yourself: Access the park site Rancho Sierra Vista/ Satwiwa via the main entrance on Lynn Road and Via Goleta. Take Via Goleta to the main parking lot. On google maps, you can enter "Car Park for Sycamore Canyon" into your google maps app for directions.

WAIVERS: The emailed program waiver and emergency medical release forms are required to be submitted in advance in order to participate the field trips.

COVID POLICY: Masks are required at all times while indoors or on the bus. Masks are encouraged at all times during the program.

What to bring: plenty of water, packed lunch/ snacks, your journal, a pen, your phone with the inaturalist app.

What to wear: comfortable shoes for walking, dress in layers, sunprotection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, long sleeves, long pants).
